Anthrax es una banda estadounidense, con base en la ciudad de New York, de Thrash metal. Fundada en el año 1981 es una de las bandas mas populares siendo junto a Metallica, Megadeth y Slayer, los “Cuatro Grandes Thrash Metal”. Con una puesta en escena notable y combinando metal con rap y con hardcore han llegado a vender mas de 10 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo.

Han hecho también numerosas apariciones en televisión como Married… with Children, WWE Raw, NewsRadio, Cheers y otras. También han aparecido en películas como Run Ronnie Run y Calendar Girls y sus canciones en videojuegos como la canción Madhouse en los videojuegos Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Guitar Hero II o V-Rock.

Megadeth es una banda estadounidense de thrash metal liderada por su fundador y principal compositor, Dave Mustaine. Es una de las principales bandas del heavy metal, ha figurado varias veces en el Top 10 de las listas del Billboard, y ha vendido más de 20 millones de copias en todo el mundo. Fue creada en 1983, después de que Mustaine fuera expulsado de Metallica, donde era guitarrista. Desde entonces, la banda ha lanzado diez álbumes de estudio, tres EP’s y dos álbumes en vivo.

Metallica es una banda de heavy metal originaria de Estados Unidos. Fue fundada en 1981 en Los Ángeles por el danés Lars Ulrich y James Hetfield, a los que se les unirían Lloyd Grant y Ron McGovney. Estos dos músicos fueron después sustituidos por el guitarrista Dave Mustaine y el bajista Cliff Burton, respectivamente. Mustaine fue despedido un año después de ingresar en la banda debido a su excesiva adicción a las drogas y al alcohol, y fundó la banda Megadeth, siendo sustituido en Metallica por Kirk Hammett. Por otra parte, en 1986, la muerte de Cliff Burton en un accidente de autobús en Suecia provocó la entrada al grupo de Jason Newsted, que, quince años más tarde, sería sustituido tras su deserción por el bajista actual de la banda, Robert Trujillo.

Hasta la fecha, la banda ha editado nueve discos de estudio. Las ventas totales de Metallica superan los 100 millones,y son considerados uno de los cuatro grandes del thrash metal junto con Anthrax, Slayer y Megadeth. Además, el grupo ha conseguido numerosos premios musicales, entre los que destacan siete Grammys, dos premios otorgados por la cadena musical MTV, dos galardones de la Academia de Música Americana y un premio de la revista Billboard, y posee una estrella en el paseo de la fama de la revista Kerrang!.

Slayer es una agrupación musical de heavy metal estadounidense fundada en 1981 por los guitarristas Jeff Hanneman y Kerry King en Huntington Park, California. Para completar su formación, King y Hanneman reclutaron al bajista y vocalista de origen chileno Tom Araya y al baterista de origen cubano Dave Lombardo. Éste último ha estado fluctuando dentro y fuera de la banda durante varios años. Slayer alcanzó la fama gracias a la edición de Reign in Blood, calificado como «el álbum más heavy de todos los tiempos» según la revista Kerrang!. Gracias a esta fama, el grupo fue incluido durante los años ochenta dentro de los cuatro grandes del thrash metal junto con Metallica, Megadeth y Anthrax.

Mercyful Fate es un influyente grupo danés de heavy metal, citado a menudo como una de las principales influencias del black metal, thrash metal, power metal y metal progresivo. En su oscura lírica se pueden encontrar temas sobre misas negras y de adoración al demonio. La música juega un papel importante con melodías lentas y rápidas, también se puede apreciar un marcado metal progresivo en sus ritmos (como en el tema Satan's Fall).

Esta comandada por el carismático King Diamond, seudónimo de Kim Bendix Petersen, que favoreció el crecimiento de la escena black metal escandinava.

Fundado en Copenhague en 1980, experimentan un gran auge en la escena "metalera" europea (como son Raunchy y Mnemic), llamando la atención de los jóvenes por sus poderosos, siniestros y emocionantes temas, gracias a la habilidad del guitarrista Hank Shermann (nombre real Rene Krolmark) y destacando la particularidad vocal de King Diamond.

AC/DC es una banda de hard rock formada en Sydney (Australia) en 1973 por los hermanos escoceses Malcolm y Angus Young.

Su primer concierto se llevó a cabo la noche de fin de año de 1973, coincidiendo con el lanzamiento de su sencillo Can I Sit Next to You Girl, cuyo cantante se llamaba Dave Evans.

Desde el principio se hicieron famosas sus actuaciones en directo, gracias en parte al extravagante estilo de su guitarrista principal, Angus Young, siempre vestido con uniforme de colegial en los conciertos. En 1976, coincidiendo con el lanzamiento del disco Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, se trasladaron a Gran Bretaña, de donde procedían los hermanos Young, concretamente de ascendencia Escocesa, e inmediatamente ocuparon los primeros puestos de ventas con discos como Let There Be Rock (1977) y Powerage (1978), a los que siguieron If You Want Blood You've Got It (1978) y el disco Highway to Hell (1979), del que se vendieron millones de copias.[2] El 19 de febrero de 1980, el vocalista Bon Scott falleció ahogado en su propio vómito por consumo excesivo de alcohol en el asiento trasero del coche de su amigo Alistair Kinnear y fue sustituido por Brian Johnson, quien pertenecía al grupo Geordie.

Aunque llegaron a Gran Bretaña en pleno auge del punk rock, en poco tiempo obtuvieron una enorme aceptación del público. El álbum Back in Black (1980) alcanzó el primer lugar en la lista de los discos más vendidos del país y los catapultó a Estados Unidos. En la segunda mitad de la década de 1980, una serie de acontecimientos personales hicieron creer que el grupo ya había pasado sus mejores momentos, aunque sus discos se mantuvieron en las listas de éxitos hasta la década de 1990. En 1993, el sencillo “Big Gun”, que utilizaron para la banda sonora de la película El último gran héroe, de John McTiernan e interpretada por Arnold Schwarzenegger; alcanzó de nuevo las listas de los más vendidos en Gran Bretaña. En 1995, grabaron el disco Ballbreaker y en el 2000 lanzaron Stiff Upper Lip, en el que proclaman su fidelidad al rock más rebelde.

Han vendido más de 150 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo,[3] y de ellos 71 millones han sido vendidos en los Estados Unidos.[4] Back in Black ha vendido aproximadamente 42 millones de unidades en el mundo[5] y 22 millones solo Estados Unidos,[6] De manera que es el 5º álbum de mayor venta de todos los tiempos en los EE. UU. y entre los álbumes más vendidos de toda la historia detrás de Thriller en el mundo. Han llegado a ocupar el cuarto puesto en la lista de VH1 "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" (Los 100 mejores artistas de Hard Rock)[7] y ocuparon el 7º puesto en la lista de MTV "Greatest Heavy Metal Band Of All Time" (Las mejores bandas de Heavy Metal de todos los tiempos).[8] Además la canción "Back In Black" se ubicó en el segundo puesto en el programa "Las 100 más Grandiosas Canciones del Hard Rock".

Cerca de 1981, cambia de nombre a Second Hell, y recluta al baterista Ingo Schwichtenberg y al bajista Markus Großkopf, quien a la vez tocaba en la banda Traumschiff. Luego, Sielck se va de la agrupación para convertirse en ingeniero de sonido y productor discográfico, a la vez que Second Hell cambia su nombre a Iron Fist. El guitarrista Michael Weikath, quien estaba tocando en la banda Powerfool, intenta convencer a Kai para que se una a su banda, pero todo terminó con Weikath incorporándose a Iron Fist. Para 1984 Iron Fist cambió definitivamente de nombre a Helloween, firmó un contrato con Noise Records, y grabó dos canciones para un recopilatorio del sello, denominado "Death Metal". Los dos temas incluídos fueron "Oernst Of Life", cuya autoría pertenece a Weikath, y "Metal invaders", de Hansen. Ambos fueron incluidos en futuros álbumes de la banda.

En 1985 Helloween grabó su primer álbum, un mini-LP autotitulado que contenía 5 temas. El mini-LP tuvo muchísimo éxito, y durante este mismo año, el entonces cuarteto grabó y lanzó su primer álbum, titulado "Walls of Jericho". Sin embargo, durante el siguiente tour, llegó a ser obvio que Hansen tenía dificultades para cantar y tocar la guitarra al mismo tiempo. La última aparición de Kai como cantante principal de la banda fue en 1986 con el single "Judas", que contenía la canción del mismo nombre y algunos temas en directo. Tras la dificultad de Hansen para tocar la guitarra y cantar a la vez, además de sus constantes problemas con su voz, surgió la idea de incluir a un quinto integrante. Entonces, Helloween empezó a buscar un nuevo cantante. Su primera opción era reclutar a Ralf Scheepers del grupo "Tyran Pace", sin embargo, ante su negativa, la banda terminó por reclutar a un joven de 18 años de una pequeña banda local conocida como "III Prophecy", Michael Kiske.

Alineación Clásica: La saga de los Keeper

Con el nuevo y joven cantante de 18 años, una mezcla entre el fraseo expresivo y enfático de Dio, el timbre y calidad de un Robert Plant, mas la evidente influencia de Bruce Dickinson, grabaron su siguiente álbum, la primera parte del que seria considerado uno de los registros más importante del Power Metal y el Epic Rock de la historia del metal: Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1 en 1987. En este disco se rescata la experiencia metalera de los dos álbumes anteriores, además de contener el sonido melódico y épico que aportaba la extraordinaria voz de Michael Kiske y donde Kai Hansen pudo concentrarse exclusivamente en la composición, arreglos y ejecución de la guitarra junto a Michael Weikath. Con este trabajo y sus presentaciones en vivo, Helloween rápidamente se convirtió en la banda de mayor éxito de Europa de aquél entonces, sabiendo conquistar a un afiatado séquito de fans.

En 1988 Helloween grabó la segunda parte de su saga épica, Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 2, el cual llegaría a ser la punta de lanza para los mercados internacionales. Este disco es considerado como uno de los pilares fundamentales en la escena del metal más melódico y experimental, y un referente para el que más tarde sería denominado Metal Progresivo. Keeper 2 llegó inclusive a un mayor éxito que su antecesor, siendo el álbum más vendido de la historia del grupo (hasta la llegada de "Master Of The Rings", gracias a temas clásicos como "I Want Out" o "Eagle Fly Free", con el cual Helloween se dio a conocer en los Estados Unidos y el resto del mundo.

A pesar de su éxito, Keeper 2 trajo consigo una carga pesada para "la calabaza". El descontento creciente de Kai Hansen por las presiones y los arreglos contractuales con el sello Noise Records, además del nuevo sonido (más melódico y comercial) que estaba tomando la banda por aquel entonces, a contramano del deseo de Kiske y Weikath de experimentar aun más allá del las posibilidades del Metal, llevo a Hansen a tomar la difícil decisión de abandonar la banda luego de la gira por Europa. Tras colaborar con Blind Guardian, toma la decisión junto al vocalista Ralf Scheppers de formar una nueva banda, más cerca al Power Metal, con el nombre de Gamma Ray.

Tras un receso de dos años y muchas especulaciones con respecto al futuro de la banda, Helloween decide continuar finalmente sin su ex-guitarrista, quien es sustituido por el destacado guitarrista del grupo Rampage, Roland Grapow, quien ya había acompañado a la banda durante la segunda parte de la gira del Keeper 2 por Estados Unidos. Con esta nueva alineación, y pese al enorme éxito que significo sus dos álbumes anteriores, Helloween continuaba debatiéndose ente sobrevivir y la disolución.

Kiske toma el control: el Lado Melódico del Metal

Luego de cierta inestabilidad, Michael Kiske puso como condición de su permanencia en la banda el tomar parte activa en la composición de los temas para el que sería el próximo álbum junto a Helloween. El resultado sería un álbum mucho más melódico que los anteriores: Pink Bubbles Go Ape, matizado por algunos pasajes que recordaban el antiguo derrotero de la banda en la escena del Metal. Pese al enfoque comercial del álbum, no tuvo el éxito esperado y comenzaron los problemas nuevamente con el sello discográfico y entre los mismos integrantes de la banda. Es así como Michael Weikath, decepcionado con el giro que había dado la banda, intenta reorganizar Helloween, invitando a los ensayos al vocalista de Pink Cream 69 Andi Deris quien declina la oferta ante la propuesta de reemplazar a Kiske.

En 1993, con la misma alineación del disco anterior, pero esta vez con influencias del pop, el jazz, el blues, y hasta el rock progresivo, lanzaron Chameleon. Este disco mostraba a la banda en una faceta más míscelánea y aun más alejada del metal que el ya comercial álbum anterior. Pese a su extraordinaria calidad y originalidad, este disco hizo que gran parte de sus fans, acostumbrados a un metal más pesado, los abandonaran. En el álbum se podían encontrar temas de gran originalidad y desarrollo musical como When The Sinner, Windmill, Step Out Of Hell, entre otros, que iban más allá del tradicional sonido metalero de las bandas de la época, mezclando los ya tradicionales arreglos metaleros junto con una orquesta de cámara, anticipando en cierta medida el sonido sinfónico y progresivo de otras bandas herederas del trabajo de Helloween de la segunda mitad de la década del 90 como Rhapsody, Stratovarius o Sonata Arctica: un sonido fresco, atrevido, lleno de pasajes que oscilaban entre un agudo sentido del humor y autocrítica, una verdadera declaración de principios sobre las creencias más intimas de cada uno de sus integrantes.

Sin embargo, la gira promocional solo sirvió para agudizar los conflictos personales entre los integrantes de la banda, hasta que finalmente el baterista Ingo Schwichtenberg cayó gravemente enfermo, (debido a una declarada esquizofrenia complicada por una dependencia a las drogas duras durante los últimos años) lo cual hizo que Weikath, cansado de su falta de compromiso hacia la banda, lo expulsara de ésta a mitad del tour.

El escaso éxito del álbum y la gira sólo hizo aumentar aún más los problemas en la banda en particular entre el guitarrista Michael Weikath y el vocalista Michael Kiske los cuales terminaron por empujar fuera a este último de la banda. El ex-vocalista, ya decepcionado de la escena musical, lanza en 1996 un disco similar a sus últimos trabajos con Helloween, esta vez en colaboración con otros grandes de la escena del Metal europeo como Kai Hansen y Adrian Smith. El disco resulta un manifiesto en contra del negocio musical de los grandes sellos discográficos, la indolencia frente a las necesidades de los demás ante nuestras propias narices y la idiotización de las masas producto de los medios de comunicación.

Weikath toma el control: La llegada de Andi Deris y el regreso al metal más duro

Helloween, ya sin Hansen, Schwichtenberg, ni Kiske, volvió con una nueva alineación en 1994 con la adición de un nuevo vocalista y amigo personal de Michael Weikath, el cantante Andi Deris, de Pink Cream 69, quien ya había sido considerado para reemplazar a Kiske dos años atrás, y el baterista Uli Kusch, de Gamma Ray. Pese a las pocas expectativas, tuvieron un relativo éxito con el lanzamiento de Master of the Rings, con un retorno a un sonido más oscuro, crudo y agresivo, más cercano al de sus primeros dos álbumes, el cual supo cautivar a una nueva audiencia de seguidores.

No obstante, la noticia del suicidio del ex-baterista Ingo Schwichtenberg, fue un golpe para la banda, los fans, y la gente relacionada con la banda. Debido a este acontecimiento, Weikath y compañía le dedicaron su segundo disco, The Time Of The Oath de 1996, inspirado en las profecías de Nostradamus. Este disco reposicionó a "la calabaza" como una de las bandas más importantes del Metal en Europa. Continuaron con la gira y lanzaron un doble directo llamado High Live.

En 1998 lanzaron Better Than Raw, para muchos, el mejor disco de la banda en la década del 90, a pesar de no estar a la altura de los Keepers. Luego llegó un álbum con versiones metaleras de clásicos del rock mundial, denominado Metal Jukebox, en 1999. En el 2000 experimentaron con The Dark Ride.

Tras la gira promocional de este último disco, Grapow y Kusch fueron expulsados de la banda debido a diferencias musicales con Weikath. En 2002, estos ex-miembros formaron la banda Masterplan. Los reemplazos para ellos en Helloween fueron encontrados rápidamente en el guitarrista Sascha Gerstner, de la banda Freedom Call, y, tras una fugaz y casi simbólica aparición en la banda del ex-baterista de Thamaritz Stephan Schlüter, el baterista Mark Cross de Metalium, quien, debido a una grave enfermedad, fue prontamente reemplazado por Stefan Schwarzmann, antes batería de Accept entre otros grupos.

Iron Maiden es una agrupación musical británica de heavy metal del área de Leyton del East End de Londres, fundada en 1975 por el bajista y compositor Steve Harris a la edad de 19 años.

Slipknot (también llamada SlipKnot) es una banda de nu metal formada en 1995 en Des Moines, Iowa. Desde el año 1999, mantiene su formación después de diversos cambios en la misma. Sus integrantes son Chris Fehn, Corey Taylor, Craig Jones, James Root, Joey Jordison, Mick Thompson, Paul Gray, Shawn Crahan y Sid Wilson; todos ellos utilizan máscaras.

Slipknot utiliza dos tipos de guitarra (principal y rítmica), bajo, dos percusionistas, además de una única batería, e instrumentos electrónicos como samplers o mesas de mezclas. El sonido de la banda ha sido descrito como “una máquina trilladora devorando un grupo de tambores militares”. El vocalista Corey Taylor también incorpora diversos estilos vocales, como por ejemplo la voz gutural, el canto melódico y el rapeo, mientras que las letras en general tienen un tono agresivo. Las influencias de la banda incluyen, entre otros géneros, el death metal, el thrash metal, el blues y el rap.

Los inicios de Slipknot se remontan al año 1992. La banda sufrió muchos cambios en su formación antes del lanzamiento de su existoso debut homónimo en 1999. Han publicado otros dos álbumes, Iowa y Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses. Se espera el lanzamiento de un cuarto álbum titulado All Hope Is Gone en el 2008.

Judas Priest es un grupo británico de heavy metal, considerado uno de los más influyentes en el desarrollo de este estilo. Sus integrantes reciben su inspiración musical básicamente de los grandes del rock psicodélico, rock progresivo y el hard rock, como Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple y Led Zeppelin aunque desde sus inicios buscaron un sonido propio que los diferenciara de las bandas de la época, anticipando así el estilo metálico que se desligaba del sonido blues, proceso iniciado por Black Sabbath y que marcaría la era de la New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Judas Priest terminó de definir el sonido heavy metal, siendo la primer banda en basar su sonido 100% en el estilo, ya que los llamados precursores (Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin y Black Sabbath) incluían otros generos como el hard rock en sus composiciones. Incluso Black Sabbath comenzó un proceso de experimentos de sonidos dentro del metal desde su tercer álbum Master of Reality, que más tarde se conocerían como stoner rock y doom metal. También se les identifica como pioneros en imponer un tipo de indumentaria característica del heavy metal, el cuero y los accesorios de metal vinculados directamente a su música. Ello se hizo a través de su vocalista, Rob Halford, quien adoptó dicha indumentaria como su imagen (debido a sus visitas a tiendas de objetos fetichistas), cada vez que se presentaba en público, induciendo al resto de la banda para que hicieran lo mismo.[3] Han vendido más de 78 millones de álbumes alrededor del mundo.

Motörhead es una banda de rock británica fundada en 1975 por el bajista, cantante y compositor, Lemmy Kilmister, que se ha mantenido a lo largo de los años como el único miembro estable.

Normalmente denominada como un power trio, Motörhead tuvo un gran éxito a principios de los años 80 con varios sencillos en las listas de venta británicas. Los álbumes Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, y particularmente No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, cimentaron la reputación de Motörhead como una de las bandas más destacadas de la escena heavy metal británica.[2]

Aunque Motörhead normalmente se clasifica como heavy metal, speed metal o thrash metal (y, a menudo, considerado como una influencia fundamental de estos dos últimos),[1] Kilmister ha rechazado estas últimas etiquetas, prefiriendo describir el estilo de Motörhead como "rock and roll".[3] El estilo de la banda se ha mantenido con los años, prefiriendo tocar lo que les gusta y se les da mejor; viéndose su gusto por el rock and roll de los primeros años en algunas de sus versiones.

Las letras de la banda hablan generalmente, de guerra, la lucha entre el bien y el mal, abuso de poder, sexo, abuso de sustancias, y la vida en la carretera. El logo de la banda, Snaggletooth, con sus cuernos, cadenas, y pinchos, fue creado por Joe Petagno en 1977 para la portada de su álbum debut, apareciendo con variaciones en otros tantos de sus álbumes.
